Lyndhurst Rifle Club - Open Championship

The weekend of the 19th and 20th of March saw the strong Lyndhurst club hold another very successful Open Championship with 57 competitors from across a wide area of the state in attendance.

Near neighbour, Mark Thurtell of Orange continued his solid form to take out the event with an excellent display of marksmanship losing only two points over the entire weekend for a final score of 323.37 just ahead of the ever present Jim Bailey of Holsworthy on 322.45. Lyndhurst youngster Howard Sweegers had a welcome return to form to run an excellent 3rd with 321.32 whilst the not so young anymore Ben Emms and Spencer Dunstall rounded out the top five with 320.37 and 320.30 respectively.

F “Troop” was, as always these days, well populated and keenly contested. New member to Lyndhurst and a recent convert from bench rest Ralph Garlick took out the winner’s cheque from another convert to F Class Greg Emms also of Lyndhurst 376.17 to 373.24. The Lyndhurst boys were closely followed by Jeff Eppleston of Bathurst on 372.26 and Dave Grayson of Lithgow 370.24. F Class is certainly gaining some momentum in the local area and it was interesting to watch the shooters from other clubs come to terms with the electronic targets and aiming off. This is one area the new NRAA Electronic Target committee does need to address i.e. standardising what lines are to be applied to electronic targets for our scoped brethren.

B Grade was a close contest between Eric Wilson of Holsworthy and Scott Brindley of Explorers who shared the spoils along with Alexia Bunt of Katoomba. Eric ended up taking the honours from Scott 312.30 to 310.22 with Alexia filling third position on 305.18.

C Grade went to another of the strong Holsworthy contingent – who are one of our greatest supporters – in the form of young Chris Schwebel with the score of 275.09 from another great supporter John Cooper of Mosman Neutral Bay on 254.07.

The only real downer for the whole weekend – apart from the Calcutta result – was Holsworthy taking out the concurrent teams match over which Lyndhurst has had a strangle hold for the last few years. Holsworthy’s team of Jim Bailey, Donna Negus and Bill Barry got the goods front of Lyndhurst No1 and Wingham 957.100 to 948.92 and 948.92. All I can say is I am happy I wasn’t responsible for team selection!

As always a huge amount of work goes into the running of these events from the preparation beforehand of the range to the feeding of the multitude on the day. A top class event only comes off with the commitment and help of the whole club and that is what Lyndhurst has become famous for. Top marks to all involved your efforts were second to none.
